Håb om redning af Harland & Wolff

Det nordirske værft Harland & Wolff, der er berømt for at have bygget Titanic, bliver måske reddet i sidste øjeblik. Værftets administratorer har angivelig modtaget et eller flere købstilbud, få timer inden fristen for at afgive et bud på værftet udløb fredag i sidste uge. Værftet har været under administration siden starten af denne måned.

Det 158 år gamle værft har fortsat stor symbolsk betydning i Nordirland, selv om det ikke længere er en stor arbejdsplads. De tilbageblevne medarbejdede har dog ikke til sinds at opgive deres arbejdsplads. De er i øjeblikket hjemsendt uden løn, men opholder sig permanent på værftet, hvor de demonstrerer for bevarelse af værftet.

Den britiske regering er blevet opfordret til at nationalisere værftet for sikre dets bevarelse, men det har regeringen afvist.

Ved slutningen af 2. Verdenskrig havde værftet 35.000 ansatte, men sygnede efterhånden hen. I 2003 stoppede skibsproduktionen på værftet, der siden har arbejdet med at renovere offshore rigge. Værftet ejes i dag af norske Dolphin Drilling
