Eksploderet gødning stammede fra skib

Det var det moldaviske skib Rhosus, der i 2013 bragte de 2.750 ton ammoniumnitrat til havnen i Beirut i 2014, der efter de foreliggende oplysninger, var årsagen til eksplosionen, der smadrede store dele af byen. Antallet af dræbte stiger fortsat.

Det var maskinproblemer, der for snart syv år siden, tvang det moldaviske skib Rhosus i havn i Beirut. Her fik skibet forbud mod at sejle videre af havnestatskontrollen på grund af en lang række fejl, og den store mængde gødning om bord blev af frygt for eksplosionsfare efterfølgende flyttet til en lagerbygning på containerhavnen.

Det fremgår af oplysninger fra advokater, der dengang hjalp besætningsmedlemmer med at få lov til at forlade det tilbageholdte skib. Hverken skibets ejer eller charterselskab ville have noget at gøre med skibet, der endte med at blive bortauktioneret. Men den store mængde sprængfarlige ammoniumnitrat fik tilsyneladende lov at ligge i lagerbygningen uden nogen form for sikkerhedsforanstaltninger.

Redningsmandskabet finder fortsat døde og sårede i ruinerne efter eksplosionen. Reuters rapporterer, at tabstallet nu ligger på “mindst 100” mens antallet af sårede nærmer sig 4.000.
