Dyr dumpning af affald i Great Barrier Reef

Det blev en dyr affære for rederiet og skibets 1. styrmand, at sidstnævnte gav tilladelse til, at en matros i 2018 smed en 120-liter spand med køkkenaffald overbord fra bulk carrieren Iron Gate. Dumpningen foregik mens skibet befandt sig i Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

”Vi har nul-tolerance overfor forurening fra skibe, og det er årsagen til, at vi - da vi blev opmærksomme på dumpningen under en rutine inspektion om bord på Iron Gate - valgte at tilbageholde skibet, og sigte 1. styrmanden og rederiet”, siger Allan Schwartz, AMSA General Manager Operations.

Dumpningen skete 13 sømil fra Lady Elliot Island, indenfor Great Barrier Reef Marine Parks grænser, mens skibet fra på vej fra Brisbane til Gladstone 2018. Al dumpning af affald er forbudt i Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

“Såvel australiere som turister besøger Lady Elliot Island for at svømme med rokker og havskildpadder - ikke i affald fra handelsskibe”, siger Allan Schwartz.

Brisbane Magistrates Court har netop opgjort den samlede bøde til 1. styrmanden og rederiet til 6.600 dollar.
