Trods forbud:Asbest i 50 pct. af nybygninger

Halvdelen af alle nye skibe indeholder asbest, selvom det meget sundhedsskadelige stof har været forbudt at bruge på nye skibe siden 2011. Det siger selskabet Maritec, der foretager inspektioner, tests, certificeringer m.m.

Mere end 65 pct. af alle skibe sejler med asbestholdige dele, viser de fund, Maritic har gjort ved inspektioner mellem 2011 og 2020.

Asbest fundet på nybyggede skibe kan blive en meget dyr oplevelse for ejeren, specielt hvis det forbudte og sundhedsskadelige stof bliver fundet under havneinspektioner, hvor det kan give bøder og tilbageholder ud over omkostningerne til at fjerne materialet.

“Jeg vil sige, at størstedelen af skibe i drift indeholder asbest, normalt i reservedele som f.eks. pakninger til rør og ventiler,” siger Alvin Lee, der er driftsleder i Maritec. “Et skib kan forlade værftet fri for asbest, men efterfølgende købe reservedele i lande, hvor asbest enten ikke er forbudt eller hvor håndhævelsen er svag,” siger han.

Pakninger til rør og ventiler, udstyr til hjælpemaskiner såsom pumper, kompressorer, kondensatorer m.m. tegnede sig for mere end 63 pct. af al asbest, der blev fundet på de undersøgte skibe. Men også i udstyr som varmevekslere og kedler og gassystemer er der fundet asbest, oplyser selskabet.
