EU-krigsskibe i Guineabugten til 2024

Selv om antallet af piratangreb i Guineabugten er faldet meget markant, fastholder EU sin maritime tilstedeværelse i bugten frem til februar 2024. Det oplyser den franske ambassadør i Nigeria, Emmanuelle Blatman.

Beslutningen om at forlænge EU's militære operation i Guineabugten frem til februar 2024, er ifølge Blatman truffet, for at give the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) mulighed for at styrke deres anti-pirat samarbejde i farvandet, før EU trækker sig ud.

Udmeldingen kom på en konference i forbindelse med 7th Lagos International Maritime Week.

Ambassadøren anbefalede samtidig, at ECOWAS udbygger den sømilitære indsats mod pirateri med juriske aftaler der sikrer retsforfølgelse af pirater, samt fængsler hvor afsoningen kan finde sted.

Emmanuelle Blatman understregede, at sikker sejlads er en forudsætning for handel og økonomisk vækst.
