MOL vil betale 9,4 mio. dollar til oprydning

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), der havde chartret bulkcarrieren Wakashio, vil give 9,4 mio. dollar til hjælp til oprydningen efter skibets olieforurening af strande og rev på Mauritius.

MOL har øremærket beløbet til genbeplantning af mangrover og rensning af koralrev. Derudover vil MOL , er er Japans største skibsejer, også hjælpe de lokale fiskere og give turismen et boost.

Det sidste skal ske ved at sende rederiets krydstogtskib Nippon Maru på togt til Mauritius i 2022, oplyser rederiet.

Japans miljøministerium har forlængst sendt eksperter til Mauritius, der er med til vurdere de skader og den nødvendige indsats, som lækket af omkring 1.000 tons brændstof fra Wakashio forårsagede.

Desuden venter det store økonomiske efterspil, der involverer skibets ejer, forsikringsselskab og manager.

De foreløbige undersøgelser af årsagen viser, at skibet sejlede tæt til land, fordi besætningen ledte efter wifi og mobilforbindelse i forbindelse med en fødselsdagsfejring.
