Ship leaking after collision in Kadetrenden
The Dutch freighter Statengracht started leaking on Friday night during a collision in Kadetrenden. No people were injured in the collision but the Dutch ship was lopsided and had to seek port
The collision happened about 12 miles north of Rügen at the eastern entrance to Kadetrenden.
The freighter Katre was coming from Stralsund while Statengracht was coming from Rauma, heading west when Katre hit Statengracht at a speed of 10 knots. The collision made a deep hole in the side of Statengracht which immediately began to take in water.
Despite the fact that the crew of Statengracht immediately started to pump water out, the cargo ship started heeling quickly as it was carrying a load pellets. It had to seek refuge in Rostock, accompanied by the German rescue ship Harrogate Koepke.
There is no observed oil spill from the cargo ship which is still in Rostock harbor. The other ship, Katre, has gone into Port Mukran. The ship is reported to have taken extensive damage in the bow.
There is no official information about the cause of the collision.
Kadetrenden is crossed every year by up to 60,000 ships.
