IMO Annual Assembly in London closed
SHIPPING: The the annual Assembly of the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization - IMO - has been finalized in London. Among the issues discussed most intensely were several Danish key issues.
Special focus was on making it simpler for the maritime industry. Superfluous regulations are to be weeded out, and paperwork must be reduced.
Furthermore, the Assembly focused on the need to go through the IMO budget with a view to effectivization. The Secretariat is to draw up a long-term plan in order to keep any budget increases to an absolute minimum.
Finally, piracy, including the social aspects of piracy, was in focus.
At the Assembly, the many participating countries took leave of IMO Secretary-General Mitropoulos. After eight years at the helm, the management of the IMO is given over to Mr. Sekimizu from Japan, who was elected at the Council meeting held in June 2011.
During the Assembly, Denmark was furthermore re-elected for the IMO Council.
